Billion people live without a toilet in their homes or have access to one that does not safely manage human waste
Children under the age of five die from diarrhea caused by unsafe drinking water, poor sanitation, and lack of hygiene everyday
Million people still practice open defecation
In densely populated rural and urban areas, especially where families live in cramped conditions or lack the means to build their own toilets, communal sanitation facilities are essential. People in these regions often have no choice but to walk long distances to find a remote place to relieve themselves. Women and girls, in particular, face a heightened risk of harassment and assault when they venture out at night to find privacy.
The burden of poor sanitation is not distributed evenly. Five countries—India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Pakistan—account for 75% of the world’s open defecation. Changing these conditions requires more than infrastructure.
BGR is actively working to change this reality through the construction of community toilet blocks in underdeveloped regions. These facilities provide multiple families with access to safe, clean, and private spaces.
